Maria Ramirez

Ms. Ramirez has over 30 years experience working in for profit, non-profit, and government agencies.  She has been Director of Programs at Community Violence Solutions and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.  She has worked with diverse populations, adult and children, ranging from sexual assault survivors to homeless populations and drug and alcohol dependent individuals and families. 

Ms. Ramirez received her Bachelor of Arts from John F. Kennedy University and majored in cultural studies. She is deeply committed to addressing all forms of oppression and understanding the implicit role that poverty, prejudice and social injustice play in all areas of the helping professions.  She received her master’s degree in Transpersonal Psychology and holds the highest regard for working with the whole person, mind, body and spirit.  Her approach to wellness and recovery is based on a holistic model.  She received an award from American Association of University Women (AAUW) for outstanding scholastic and leadership achievements and an Award from Soroptomist International for her curriculum on implementing classroom diversity.

In her early years she was a foster parent for over 30 children.  She worked with many families in crisis and received numerous awards for her work as a therapeutic foster parent.  Ms. Ramirez sat on the Board of Directors for Contra Costa County Child Abuse Prevention Council and the Multi-Cultural Task Force.  She was nominated for the Warrington Stokes Award and has been recognized by Congress; the State Senate; and by Governor Gray Davis for her commitment to “Outstand and Invaluable Service to the Community”.  She received the Women of the Year Award from the Contra Costa County Women’s Hall of Fame for Women in the category of Women Working for Justice. 

Ms. Ramirez worked for the Internal Revenue Service for over five years, worked in the banking profession for several years, and has a background in accounting.  She is also a notary public.  Although she has an extensive background in finance her true passion lies in working with people to help them reach their fullest potential.
